Founded in 1994 by Gianfranco Monacelli, the press has a backlist of about 250 books on architecture, fine arts, interior design, landscape architecture, photography and graphic design. The company will operate as a standalone imprint of Random House Inc. with Gianfranco Monacelli continuing to head the operation from new offices at Random House’s New York office. Sales and distribution will move from Penguin to Random House July 1. Random deputy chairman and COO Edward Volini said RH welcomes Monacelli Press “as a unique publishing program within Random House and look forward to providing growth opportunities for our new colleagues’ business.”

Here are two great pre-publication quotes for THE AVIARY GATE by Katie Hickman.
“The Aviary Gate reminds us of the fact that Katie Hickman is first and foremost a vibrant story-teller who writes mainly because of the pure joy of weaving stories, be they historical or as in this case fictional accounts. And for that, I am very grateful to her.”- Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran
“It is a hugely enjoyable novel, multi-layered, vividly depicted and a fascinating story, filled with the colours, sights and scents of Constantinople in the 16th century. This story is at the same time fast moving, complex and deeply satisfying and I hope it sells loads and loads!” - Joanne Harris, author of Chocolat and Lollipop Shoes

Jon Krakauer will write about American-football-player-turned soldier Pat Tillman, who died in a controversial friendly fire incident in Afghanistan for THE HERO, set for releas in October, 2008. Doubleday’s David Drake says it reflects Krakauer’s “fascination with extreme people, who push themselves to the very limits of their capabilities.” The publisher is announcing a first printing of 500,000 copies.

Arnon Grunberg has been very busy (as always), and we wanted to share some highlights of his recent press with you.
Bookslut: “Arnon Grunberg is a great literary talent. . .”
The Los Angeles Times: “Grunberg is a master of stealthy wit, land mine-like understatement, whiplash dialogue and lacerating social commentary.”
Publishers Weekly: Arnon spoke with PW not long ago. Here’s the full interview –
