Andrea Gillies’ KEEPER, published by Short Books, has won the inaugural Wellcome Trust Book Prize, an award worth £25,000.
The Wellcome Trust Book Prize is awarded to the finest fiction or non-fiction book of the year in which medicine (or medical science) is a central theme.
In KEEPER, Andrea Gillies writes about her decision to take on the full-time care of her mother-in-law, an Alzheimer’s sufferer. Jo Brand, chair of the judging panel, said: “Andrea Gillies’ account of living with Alzheimer’s is the perfect fusion of narrative with enough memorable science not to choke you. It’s a fantastic book—down to earth and darkly comic in places. The judges found it compelling.”
Alongside Jo Brand, who is a comedienne, author and former psychiatric nurse, the other judges were BBC science journalist Quentin Cooper; former Welsh National Poet and non-fiction writer Gwyneth Lewis; poet and medical historian Richard Barnett; and author, poet and medical professor Raymond Tallis.
The other shortlisted books were ‘Illness’ by Havi Carel (Acumen Publishing); ‘Tormented Hope’ by Brian Dillon (Penguin Ireland); ‘Intuition’ by Allegra Goodman (Atlantic Books); ‘Three Letter Plague’ by Jonny Steinberg (Random House/Vintage); and ‘Cutting for Stone’ by Abraham Verghese (Random House/Chatto).

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT DICK CHENEY
TO PUBLISH MEMOIR WITH THRESHOLD EDITIONS
NEW YORK, June 24, 2009 — Former Vice President Dick Cheney will publish his much-anticipated memoir with Threshold Editions, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Inc.
Threshold Editions has acquired all world, serial, and electronic rights to the book, which will also be published as an audio book from Simon & Schuster Audio. Publication of the yet-to-be-titled work is expected in Spring 2011. Simon & Schuster President and CEO Carolyn Reidy and Robert Barnett of Williams & Connolly negotiated the agreement for the memoir.
Few Americans alive today can match the breadth of former Vice President Dick Cheney’s service as a statesman, policymaker, and politician. The former Vice President will collaborate with his daughter Liz Cheney, attorney and former State Department senior official, to offer his reflections on world affairs, American politics and campaigns, conservative ideology, and the critical events of our era.
“It has been a tremendous privilege to serve during some of the most interesting and challenging times, as well as with some of the most fascinating people, in American history,” said former Vice President Cheney. “I look forward to writing about these experiences for the first time.”
“For more than forty years, Dick Cheney served at the highest levels of government, and in sharing his unique perspective on the events he witnessed, it will become apparent to the reader why he was given positions of great responsibility by four different presidents,” said Carolyn Reidy. “His memoir will reveal not only his legendary grasp of the major issues we have faced and his command of the details of policy and politics, but also his abiding passion for our country. It promises to be a work of paramount interest no matter where you stand in the political spectrum.”
Louise Burke, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Threshold Editions, added, “I am thrilled Threshold will be publishing former Vice President Cheney’s book. We think his candid account of his many years of service to the country, much of it during the most pivotal events of our times, will be mandatory reading for anyone interested in recent history.” Threshold’s Editor in Chief, Mary Matalin, a former White House and Cheney advisor, noted, “the Cheney memoir will be the most important and unique political and policy treatise in a generation.”

Heaney wins David Cohen prize
18.03.09
The David Cohen Prize for Literature 2009 has been awarded to Irish poet Seamus Heaney. The prize, worth £40,000, was presented by the chair of judges and Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, at a ceremony hosted by the British Library.
Motion said: “The self-renewing force of his writing, and the sheer scale of his achievement make the award of the Cohen Prize an absolutely right and proper act of recognition.”
Heaney said: “Much about the David Cohen Prize makes it highly honorific: first of all there’s the list of the previous winners, a roll call of the best; there’s the fact that you don’t enter for it but are chosen from the wide field of your contemporaries; and then there’s the verification of that
reference to ‘lifetime achievement’ – a lovely reward when offered by a panel of such distinguished writers and readers.”
The biennial prize has previously been awarded to people including Harold Pinter, Doris Lessing, Beryl Bainbridge and Michael Holroyd.
The winner of the David Cohen Prize chooses the recipient of the Clarissa Luard Award, which is worth £12,500. Heaney chose to present this year’s Clarissa Luard Award to Poetry Aloud, an annual poetry speaking competition open to all post primary students in Ireland. The competition is run by the National Library in association with Poetry Ireland.

WINTER STUDY: A NOVEL
by NEVADA BARR
Marilyn Stasio of the New York Times Book Review picks her “Notable Crime Fiction of 2008” titles.
Among the 19 titles selected is WINTER STUDY by Nevada Barr.
Stasio writes:
“My pick for the crime novel with the bleakest setting is Nevada Barr’s WINTER STUDY (Putnam, $24.95). This rugged environmental mystery, which unfolds in the middle of a blizzard, finds a ranger working on a research project at Isle Royale National Park, on the Canadian border, where a killer is hunting along with the wolves.”
AMERICAN ADULTERER
by JED MERCURIO
——The Guardian
The Daily Telegraph
——The Sunday Herald
